Mary Buttrill's Story

In 1817, Mary and her husband William Buttrill, a revolutionary war soldier and aide to George Washington, moved to Butts County.

Mrs. Mary, a devoted Christian of the Methodist faith, had a log cabin built near what is now the entrance to the city cemetery. One afternoon a week she would gather the children of the community, both black and white, and held the first religious and educational activities in what would later become Jackson.

The Mary Buttrill School at Jackson United Methodist Church is continuing her example by providing a well rounded Christian environment in which children can learn and grow.
