Students may be legally excused from school attendance only for the specific reason outlined below according to Georgia State law. Students must present documentation at the time of the absence and not more than three days after returning to school if one of these reasons apply. Inappropriate, late, or unacceptable documentation could be classified as unexcused.

Excused Absences:
   1. Personal illness and attendance would endanger the student or the health of others.
   2. Serious illness or death in the immediate family
   3. Special and recognized religious holiday observed by their faith.
   4. Impossible weather conditions.
   5. Governmental agency mandates.
   6. Students who become ill or injured at school shall be excused.
   7. Early dismissal- Must be present for one-half of the day.
   8. Early dismissal- Present a written request or speak to principal.

A written excuse is required when a student is absent from school. The excuse should include date and reason for absence as well as parent or guardian's signature. A student who misses an excessive number of days may be subjected to retention in the present grade level as determined by the school administration. If a student has been absent from school 5 or more unexcused days the school may require a doctor's statement.

Attendance Protocol/Excessive Absences
    1. After 2 days of continual absences the teacher will call for an update.
    2. After 3 unexcused or 5 total absences, A letter will be sent home.
    3. After 7 unexcused or 10 total absences the student and parent may be brought before the school board to deal with the attendance concerns.
