Missions and Outreach
The membership of JUMC has participated in local, national and international missions throughout the history of our church.
LOCAL MISSIONS
CERF-Christian Emergency Relief Fund: Members of our church have developed a local emergency relief program to be of help to the citizens of our county. This program has drawn together other churches and citizens in order to have a united effort and impact in our community. Financial support and the CERF house are provided by JUMC. CERF started a community garden to provide fresh produce for those in need. The CERF house also provided space for a local domestic abuse program called Haven House.
Let's Wrap is a recent program developed by our church members to provide coats for school children. The funds are raised, coats bought and given to children in our local schools.
Thanksgiving Dinner has been provided to hundreds of local families in need. For many years our membership has bought, cooked and delivered traditional Thanksgiving meals on Thanksgiving Day.
The United Methodist Children's Home is financially supported by our congregation every year.
NATIONAL MISSIONS
Youth mission trips have been made through out the Southeast and out West. Every summer the youth have painted houses, repaired roofs, conducted summer camp and VBS for many citizens in need.
Every year JUMC offers financial support to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
We have made and paid for many flood buckets. We sent a team to the Gulf Coast after Katrina.
INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS
The congregation of JUMC has financially supported a UMC missionary family in Cambodia for many years.
We recognize the great need in other foreign countries as well. The Nothing But Nets program to protect children and adults from malaria in Africa was supported by membership donations.
We have several church members very involved in working in foreign missions as well. They have been to Honduras on medical missions and work missions. We have members very interested in the needs of farm animals in Honduras as well. We have provided funds to help buy medications the animals need as well as the citizens who have so much need. We have church members who have been to Uganda and Kenya to work in the mission field as medical workers and to share the word of God.
John Wesley's 300th birthday- 1703-2003. Wesley, born in England June 17, 1703, was the 15th of 19 children. He is the founder of "Methodism" in which the Methodist church is based.
John Wesley had many inspiring messages including this motto adopted by our Youth Mission programs:
"Do all the good you can,
by all of the means you can,
in all of the places you can,
in all of the ways you can,
at all the times you can,
to all the people you can,
for as long as you ever can!"
He also said, "Catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to watch you burn."
Summer Mission Trips have included:
Biloxi, Mississippi, 2003 - Youth and adults teamed up to repair and rennovate several homes in need.
Apalachicola, FL, 2004 -37 youth and adults traveled to Florida St. Georges Island area and renovated 8 homes.
